Camp
Hero is the first of such locations being developed.
Located in central West Virginia, it is a quiet cove of nature, a place
where returning heroes can call home for 3-12
months during their transition back to civilian life.
Not
just nature walks and horses
Our heroes that make the farm their home
for a short time will have access to resources and
professionals to assist with employment preparation and search,
college admissions and financial aid, access to rehabilitative
services, fitness trails for maintaining health, and community
outreach opportunities to strengthen their ties back into the
American fabric.
They will have chores to do of course, as they would
any place they live, and likely most importantly, there will be
a sharing from veteran to veteran, in ways that the average
American just would not understand.
Partnering
Of course, those of us at American Heroes Return
who are sponsoring this restreat would be derelict in our own
duties if we did not reach out to military and civilian
organizations and partner where appropriate to ensure we are
providing the best range of services to our men and women coming
back from war.
A great program is not buildings, horses, or wide
open spaces, although all of that helps, but a great program is
built on strong ties and networking to others who also have the
veteran's best interest in mind and provide services to
compliment ours, and ours to compliment theirs.
A hand up, not out
This is
not just a respite– it is a place Americans honor them with recreation, good honest
daily work, and resources and time to secure education and
employment opportunities. This is not a hand out but instead, a
well deserved hand up for our veterans.
